Goodbye Google Reader. Hello Flipboard.

Everyone seems to be talking about Google Reader going away on July 1st. That leaves those of us that use the tool wondering which is the best tool out there to replace it. I don't have the answer but I'll provide a few options.

Some bloggers use bloglovin' and Feedly (I already use those) but there is one other tool that I haven't seen anyone mention. Flipboard works somewhat like Feedly but I've been using it for a long time and it's where I decided to save my Google Reader feeds.

If you want to be safe and, if you have accounts in all of the above, why not save your google feeds to all three? I am a little hesitant on exporting my feed to all three but would like to hear your thoughts and plans. Share them in a comment below.

Goodbye Google Reader. I will miss you.

Draw your heart out!

Hi there! I am here experimenting with the Paper App for the iPad and I am really enjoying it. As a graphic designer, I have always wanted to create great illustrations but that's not a gift I have or that I have practiced to master. I've learned that not every designer is an illustrator and, not every illustrator is a designer.

I am always experimenting with new things so I want to give myself a chance and draw something each day for a month and see how creative I get. I'll be posting my daily creation on Instagram. Keep in mind that I am not promising anything fancy but please join me in this crazy challenge that I've given myself.

Cheers!

Cheers from San Francisco!

I am writing today's post away from home. It's 6:22 AM in San Francisco, CA and I am such a morning person that I am up and ready at the Starbucks Coffee line. The rare thing here is that I just got a bottle of water and an apple. Not hungry nor feeling the need for coffee.

The reason for my trip is the HOW Design Live Conference. I am blessed with an amazing day job that  is paying for it. Fortunate to work for a company - and have a boss - that care for their employees growth.

I arrived yesterday and headed straight to the hotel. Setup my stuff and walked to the conference at Moscone West. It's rainy and humid here so I am not very pleased with that because my walk is about 10 minutes. Yes, that's coming from a New Yorker that's used to walking a lot!

But let me tell you that I am very happy to be here. The opening keynote last night was Austin Kleon, he taught us how to steal like an artist and my take on his talk is this:
Nothing is original because everything is inspired by something else (even if you don't think it is) so, go ahead and make something. Make art. If you think something should be different change it. Do the things that make you happy in life and good things will come. And finally, fake it 'till you make it. Pretend to be what you want to be, or how you want to be, and you'll eventually get there.

One last thought to those of you who think that art is just designing, painting and drawing, art is whatever you make and connects you to other people. This I learned from Seth Godin's book 'The Icarus Deception' that I just finish reading last week. Do recommend it to anyone.

Happy Monday!

Fuchsia fabric rug!

Meet my new decor items brought straight from the Dominican Republic. My mom is always onto something new. She recently learned how to make these super awesome fabric rugs and made me one using fuchsia fabric. I haven't created a tutorial in months so that might be my next tutorial post. I'll learn from her and teach you how to make it.

Have a lovely weekend!

Elephant Art Love!

I am removing the yellow color from my living room wall and making it clean and clear white. The yellow color has been really bothering me after we got a dark grey sofa. I suddenly want everything white and  wish I could paint the wood furnisher white too. Moving to the topic of this post, I am now looking for pretty artwork for my future white wall. Have you heard about Art.com? I came across the site a few days ago and liked the huge variety of affordable art. Whatever you are looking for from fine art cubism, art deco, and surrealism to photography.

I decided to search for elephant artwork for my wall because I've had a thing for elephants ever since I got my iPhone cover from Valentina a few years ago. Elephants are supposed to be good luck and they just look really cute. Here are a few nice ones that I found on the site. Thoughts? Share them in a comment. Cheers!

Fuchsia styles: $50 or less!

Hello there! I hope you have lovely plans for this father day weekend. I was lucky to have my father over for the past two weeks and now, hoping to celebrate fathers day with my future baby's father and other fathers in the family tomorrow.

For the weekly color post, I picked out some fuchsia fashion items under $50 but there was one item that had to sneak into the group for a liiiitle bit (not really) more. Sorry, that +J.Crew bag is just too cute!

Take a look at my cool board and let me know which is your favorite piece in a comment below. Cheers!

What's in my June BirchBox?

Happy Holidays!!! (Joke) It just feels like Christmas around here. I just got my June +Birchbox full of awesome goodies that I already started playing with.

I'll start with my favorite two items (top right image) and make my way down.
1. A neon color nail polish from Color Club's Wanderlust collection in collaboration with BirchBox. I saw a girl wearing a similar color on her toes a couple days ago and loved it. Now I get to have my own nails shine with this neon laquer.

2. Exfoliate foaming cleanser from Suki. Just a tiny bit of this product is enough. I took a small amount to try it on my hand but had to exfoliate my full left arm. Can't wait to try it in the shower. By the way, it smells like lemon which for me is delish!

3. Itty bitty files from +Tweezerman. Perfect to carry around in the purse, and to leave at the work desk for a nail emergency.

4. Postcards inspired by +Birchbox locations. That includes a Cheers! card all the way from London. ;)

5. Glossy Kiss lipstick from Mirenesse. This lipstick can give you a matte or glossy finish plus it can also be used as a blush.

6. Couture La La sample from Juicy Couture. I tried this product at Sephora a few months ago and it's not my taste but it does smell soft and familiar. I probably have some friends that own it! :)

Follow me on instagram.com/cheerscristalia to receive my daily updates on other products and fun stuff. Do you currently own any of these products or brand. Tell me all about it in a comment below!

Judging books by covers...

People say don't judge a book by it's cover, meaning that content is what's important. I agree. What I don't agree on is that as a designer and visual person that I am, I'll be choosing a book with a bland cover from the bookstore shelves.

Most of the books I read are on my Kindle, but I still visit Barnes and Nobles at least once a month and wonder around thinking about what I'll be reading next. A well designed book cover will definitely be picked up by my hands and even if it isn't added to my reading list, it accomplished the designers goal.

Last year I read many novels-including the Hunger Games and the Grey series (Wink, wink) and what made me read them was definitely the buzz that every women I know was already reading the book. That's a proof that content is key but I also want to make the point that content could be discovered by an awesome cover.

One of my goals for this year is to read 12 books and below are some book covers I liked and made the books part of my reading list. Enjoy and feel free to share what you are currently reading in a comment below. Also, please share your thoughts on the books below if you have already read them.

Cheers!

Vegas Inspired Typographical Installation

Fall in love with this Vegas inspired typographical installation by Studio Xag. As they described, each letter has it's unique story that can be tracked back to real Vegas signage.

Fuchsia plant?!

Doing research for the June color of the month, I found out that there is a plant named fuchsia. Looking at it made me realize that it's where the color fuchsia comes from. According to Wikipedia, the plant was first found on the Caribbean Island of Hispaniola (Whaaaat??!!) I know, if you are Dominican, you are probably just as shocked as I am. If you are not, let me tell you that I've never seen this beautiful flower plant in the Dominican Republic - my birth country. Now you know why I am at awe with my findings.

Conclusion, always be willing to learn new things. Today, more than ever, I realize how doing research for this blog is a fantastic tool for that. Next steps? Find the fuchsia plant during my next trip to the Dominican Republic.

I hope you too learned something new today. If this isn't new to you, go visit this site Todayifoundout.com (Also new to me.) Happy June 1st and share your fuchsia plant thoughts below.
